The Wessex Band Summer School is the longest running course of its type in the country and is the only one catering for both wind and brass bands, culminating in a massed band.

Back in 1970, two 16-year-old Blandford schoolboys, John Grinnell and Andrew Pitts were disappointed at not being able to take part in their county youth orchestra’s residential course due to financial cutbacks. They came up with the idea to organise a 4-day course involving youngsters from bands in the surrounding area under the direction of Courtney Bosanko, the Musical Director of the local Championship Section brass band.

Sadly, Andrew died very early in his career as an army bandsman while John, alongside his wife Margaret, continued to organise the annual event.

From a band of 44 brass musicians the course now boasts over 200 students across brass, wind and percussion instruments, including a training band to develop fresh talent. Encompassing a passion for lifelong learning, Wessex has moved away from a youth course to include enthusiastic musicians of all ages.

The tutors and conductors come from many walks of life, from professional musicians and teachers to incredibly talented amateur players. All are chosen for their quality of musicianship and the ability to pass on their enthusiasm to others.
